many thousands of people protested and petitioned against the war in Iraq, that didnt make any difference, i hardly think they will change their minds about one of their main revenue sources.

Think about it. We already have a pay as you go system in the form of fuel duty which also automatically takes into account the economy of your car. What possible advantage could there be to using a pay-per-mile system?

I'll tell you. Sooner or later we will have to stop using petrol/diesel and run our transort on something else. We dont know what it will be yet - hydrogen, nuclear, electric batteries, lots of mice on treadwheels etc, or more importantly, how the government will be able to tax whatever it is we end up with.

So pay per mile is a nice catch all system. They put it forward now before they actually need it, to give the public time to acquiesce. I could be way off the mark, but this is my view on the matter.

Any government will require some form of heavy tax on motoring, not just labour - it's a huge revenue source. In case you havent noticed, all the road tax and fuel duty doesnt get spent on the roads, it funds public services in general. The others will do the same or equivalent after the election that brings them to power, unless it is clear by then what the prevailing new energy source is and a pay per unit taxation method can be used. You'd be naive to think they wont.

Yes, because the BNP will solve all of Britain's problems wont they.

I must admit I do have a certain affinity with some of the BNP's more moderate ideas, but i really dont think they could run a bath, let alone a country.

i was number 450 Laughing

The government has always screwed over the motorist.

Its fecking ridiculous.

1998 classic car owners successfully got 25 year old cars (pre 1973) to be tax exempt. This was meant to be a rolling exemption, as in when your car was 25 it no longer had to pay road tax. But they then went ahead and just froze it at pre 1973 cars.

This new bright idea.

You still have to pay insurance, so thats a grand or so lets call it £1200 for easy maths.

Petrol is still gonna be dear, they will not drop it down to 20p a litre it may come down 10p or so. Lets say petrol will cost 70p per litre. Tenner to go 100 miles.

Then assume you drive in a congested area to get to work, its gonna be a pound per mile.

But the commute to work is 100 miles.

So every month you pay £100 insurance, £200 petrol, £2000 road tax to go to work and back.

£2300 to just get to work and back.

Who can afford that? Not many people.

They say use public transport, you can't its already over capacity, theres to many peopel for the system to deal with thats why they take cars!

People will be forced to stop driving cars.

What does that mean, yes thats right no cars being used, lots will be dumped or crushed as their value will plummet. Also the motor servicing industry will just die over night. No new cars will be sold. Lots of unemployed people.

I am surprised the major manufacturers and garage chains have not kicked up shit about this yet.

only another 60 million to go. and its not just this govenment that has screwed the motorist every govenment does it 'cus its an easy way to raise revenue, and unfortunatley it will never change people have to travel, public transport is not cheap and not always reliable so people drive. to go by train to dundee is £150 return. cheaper to fly, but flying is more harmfull to the enviroment, 1 jumbo takeing off puts out more pollutants than all the cars traveling on the m1 in 1 hr, fact.
