 Grinding noise

Driving along slowly you can hear a loud on/off grinding noise....grind..slience...grind...silence... which gets more frequent as speed inscreases untill it becomes a constant noise. just changed a suspect drive shaft to no avail, what else could it be?

brakes sticking, wheel bearing, the other shaft?

Out of interest, the splined shaft coming out of the diff that you slot the driveshaft over; I could pull that in and out about 0.5cm's (maybe slightly more) Is that normal?

yes it's normal, u have to have a little play to make up for turning of the wheels and suspension travel.

no thats the driveshaft fitting, hes on about after u take the driveshaft out, the bit sticking out of the diff he can move in and out ...

i believe that is the actually diff itself, but am unsure if movement is normal...i dont think it is tbh. bearings maybe gone.

if you can pull that spline in and out 5mm then its fucked. You can normally only feel it but not see it.

The diff is meant to be secured properly. circlip might have popped off inside though.

Balls...so the fix is? (I'm hoping your not going say new box!) I take it i'd be able to tell if the cirlip has come off by take the other shaft out? I always thought a popped cirlip meant no drive? Please enlighten me Very Happy Could this be the source of my grinding noise?

no the circlip on the drivers side which secures the diff to the box. the other circlip secures the sunwheel into the diff only.

u get to that thru the n/s opening tho? Ie have to pull it all out to find out?

remove the oil seal from the drivers side.

When you pull the seal out looks along the splines, there should be a circlip securely fastyened.

So just flat fladed screw driver/pliers to get the oil seal out? If its not securley fastened what needs to be done? If it IS secuerly fastened what else could it be? (or is the nothing else it would be?)

if its not secured, you need to knwo why its not secured, bearing could have collaspsed which has pinged it off or it ight still be on but the bearings collapsed.

Can you see if the bearings collapsed by taking the passenger side shaft out? If its collapsed then is it new box time? or can you fit a new bearing in situ?

if you pop out the passenger side, then remove the circlip, remove the sunwheel get a drift then smash the planet wheels out then shatter the diff houring then you might see.

So basically if the bearing has collapsed its new box time?

Bugger...so that new steering rack...new box...could that cause the sort of grinding noise im getting? im guessing it would if the bearing has collapsed? Also noticed it only makes the noise when going above say 5mph.

probaly is box related then if the noise is only there above a few mph.

is it losing oil? Does it have any oil in it?

Aye, it does indeed have oil in it, checked it the other day, there is some oil under the box, not sure if its engine or box oil will, check the level again when it's cooled down tonight
