The 99' Megane Diesel is getting a bit of a crunch when selecting 2nd gear and reverse. Could the gearbox oil require a change or is this the begining of the end for the gearbox. There is a wingnut type screw on the side of the gearbox, is this the screw to empty the oil out and is the resevoir the white bottle thing attached to the radiator cowling. Or should I just torch it, as recommended by my mate? He loves Renaults
Or.... could the clutch be fcuked (all other gears are ok) |

If the clutch was fucked then you'd get it with all gears.
Sounds like a few teeth have been bent/twisted on 2nd gear.
Only remedy is a new or reconditioned gearbox. |

Surely he'd get the same prob in all gears if it was a mount?
As far as I'm concerned if it's gear-specific, then it's a gearbox problem. |

The mounts thing may have some cred there. When I turn off the engine, the engine gives off a bit of a hefty shake before stopping. I dont remember forcing 2nd gear to cause such a problem that may require a new box. Torching looks good to me |

the plastic wing nut is where you fill the box and check the level, the level should be inline with the hole.
the plastic bottole on the radiator is for the power steering fluid.
check the oil level, in fact change it to be sure.
2nd is just a tired synchro which isn't helped by dodgy oil.
as for reverse give it a few seconds before selecting reverse. |
