This mess is coming from somewhere.

Any ideas where from?

Also what's the best stuff for cleaning an engine?

rocker cover gasket and no doubt some will be coming from the breather stub.

is that a 1.8 MPI engine ?? shockingly clean i say Shocked

i used gunk and plastic brush for cleaning the engine but i think its crap .
your best bet would be a steam cleaner if you want to get it spanking clean

looks so much like the 1.8 8v petrol engine ,would the head from this engine go on to the 1.8 8v by any chance ?

in that case i shall stick with the good old 2.0l laguna 8v head conversion dream than Razz
