i just bought a heap of shit renault megane 1.9td 1996. It needs a new bearings, but as i dont have the money to get a professional to do the job i have to do ity myself. So i have the engine out and the gearbox off,but when i tryed to open it up it looked very complex,so i decided to replace the gearbox. But it is proving to be a problem finding the right one because they have different numbers on them and trying to match them is a nightmare. I have found 1 but the guy wants £350 for it! I found a second in a scrap yard but the bearings was also needing repaired plus i dont know if ot was the right gearbox(think the guy was tryin to rip me off). So does anyone know where i can get a gearbox from at a good price or do you have any suggestions what i should do.(Like burn it!) |

as long as you use a diesel box it should be ok, if you use a petrol box then your goign to severly limit your top speed and the engine will be screaming.
Most boxes in the petrol cars run around 3500rpm at 70mph. Which is a bit higher than the diesels!
Any td 19 or clio box should go fine.
Whereabouts in edinburgh do you live? |

Also i have phoned every scrapies in the yellow pages (Edinburgh,Glagow,Newcastle) And i know what ye mean with scrapies having bad attitudes,we drove all the way to newcastle from edinburgh to buy this gearbox that he said that the numbers matched, but guess what there was not even any numbers on it,and it was all burned to fu*k. But the guy kicked us off their land coz we would to pay him for takin it off.LOL. So no more scrapies for me you cant trust a word they say. |

I ken leith. I like edinburgh, maybe its cos I'm fae glasgow but I liek spending time there, got a mate in Granton.
Anyway...
Check the yellow paper, might have a gearbox in there, if not get a whole clio/19 diesel for pennies with a duff engine and take the box.
If you really need to get motoring you can get a petrol box and use it for a while until you find a diesel one.
I will keep an eye out though at this end. |

Well if icould use any gearbox (from deisel only) that would be all my problems solved, but i dont want to go buy a gearbox, put it on, put back the engine and it does not work,so i need u to be 100% sure on this, not that im doubting your knowlege, but it is a lot of work if i have to take the engine out again!
Aye i like edinburgh, and leith is getting better by the day.Well im gonna try this different gearbox and i will keep u posted,
