Chris
I know this echo's the engine swap clio thread a little bit but.....

A mate has a 1997 ph 1 Laguna estate 1.8 mpfi. It has a knackered engine Am guessing that a 2.0 would drop straight in as the blocks look the same. As does the injection system if I remember rightly. Am I right in thinking that the immobiliser is not connected-coded to the ECU which would probably need changing also. Can I bypass the immobiliser?

Sorry mate. You must get bord of answering all these shitty questions all day.

if you get a 2 litre and its ECU from the same sort of age 96/97 you can plonk the lump in along with the ECU and it shoudl work. Its not a rolling code in 96 cars so it shoudl work happily.
