Y'know that chip that was on ebay quite often a while back, made by 'Mick' was it? The one that Wicked Neo was having a go with? Did anyone ever decide a final verdict on whether it was any good or not?

hello Simon,

my overall results with the chip is that yes, it did make performance gains, midrange was much improved on my ph2, but top end was about the same.
however since then my ph2 has had a de-cat added and an IK
so i may refit the chip (once i have rebuilt the top end on it) and see what results they have

by the way i still have a spare chip which i could let u have to test out.
if you find it makes a difference, then u can bung maybe a tenner my way for it and a tenner micks way for it.
that way u got urself a chip for a good cheap price

if you dont find it works for u just return it

I am liking the sound of that! I haven't checked if I've got the ECU which will let me just bang the chip in yet though. To be honest, I dunno what I'm lookin for really. I remember there being a post about certain model numbers of ECU having the 'slot in' chips? Mine's a 1994 5dr Executive hatch. Do you know if that'll have the right kind of ECU? Or will I still have to look?

Well I'd love to try the chip yeah. But as always, I'm just scared it'll fuck things up. I've always thought there was something 'dodgy' about chips. Kinda like overclocking a computer......yeah it'll go faster.......but it'll also probably blow up. lol

i need the numbers on the ECU
most dont come with the socket but i can do a 3 day turnaround for fitting the socket and the chip

Okay, now you get to see how intelligent I really am.....

Um.....err....how do you get to the fuckin ECU??!! I've taken the strap off that holds the casing to the car, and then I am left with what appears to be a solid plastic box.......no openings to get to what's inside? There are 2 metal 'things' on the front that look as if they used to be bolts a long time ago, but are now pretty much perfect circles, so I won't be un-doing them. doh. Is there a clip or something that I'm missing?

Theres a certain knack to getting the bugger out of the cradle.

If you dont have that knack, just do as I do and grab the thing and pull it really hard while wobbling it in all directions, it will eventually come out, usually with a big gouge in the plastic case from the end of one of the bolts that hold the wing on...

TBH I just went outside and opened mine by putting a screwdriver on the lip, twisting and pulled the top cover off.

took seconds!

but maybe min is just easy to open??

Right, okay I've opened it. So I've unclipped the cradle thing from the car and taken the top cover off and can now see what's inside. I got like a black plug (looks like a massive scart plug), plugging into a metal box. There's a number on the plug.......

Is this the number you're looking for Si? Anyone else know if this is the number that Si needs to know? I have no idea where I'm meant to be looking! Do I have to get as far in as the circuit board? Cuz that's what I was guessing I had to do.

Okay so there's 2 bolts each side yeah? Like this......

Which looks pretty straight forward, but look at the other side of 'em. They seem to be circles, not nut shaped. Don't even look like they used to be nuts. They're just circles. So how the hell does that work?

I ain't tried undoing 'em yet incase I can't get 'em back in. Don't even know if I need to be doin that yet either. Need to know where this number is that I'm looking for!

captive bolts, u just undo the nuts on the other side and the ECU slips out.

i need the numbers on the ECU itself Si, so u got to remove it from the plastic case.

yep thats what i needed.

it will need a socket soldered in, the chip should work fine on that ECU.
reason for putting in the socket is that if the chip is unsuitable for any reason, u can just put the standard one straight back in.

So have you got a socket to solder in? How much would you want for doin it si? I would love to give it a go, but am just trying to think when I'd have 3 days I could cope without bein able to use me car for. doh

I got an idea Si. Just had a look on ebay, and I reckon I'll buy another ECU and get it delivered to you, then you can do ur thang and whip it accross to me if that's okay? That way I can keep my standard ECU untouched and then just swap it for the new one when it arrives. I believe this one would work in my car cuz it appears to have the same numbers?

yeah that should also work fine.

suggestion: when u recieve that ECU, try it in your car standard first to make sure it works correctly before we fit the chip.

remember when u connect up the ECU, you need to plip the doors locked and unlocked again before your car will start.
