Has anyone any experience of Car Auctions (apart from Ebay)? Any good? There's one that operates all over Scotland and the highest price an R19 has gone for was Â£250 Shocked

Cheapest was Â£10 Shocked

They are good for buying but bad for selling. (never get a good price)
Only problem is they are all sold as seen. You take a look, listen to it run and hear a description of the car. Based on that you make your decision. (If you go early you can have a look around the cars in more detial)

Go and have a look, if nothing else it will be an experience

can get some super buys

but waite till the end..

normally go a lot cheaper.

blackbush market is about 30 mins away from me.

Bought from auctions before, car and salvage, get good motors from salvage sometimes, no damage/drive aways

There's a 19TD coming up in Aberdeen tommorrow, just need to figure out how to get there!

yeah been to loads, they can be quite good but you can buy a nail. on the other hand the dodgy buyers make faults into the cars.

You have no idea how the car drives etc, all you can do is have a nose around inside and when the driver gets in get him to rev it that abut all you can do.

How to build in auction faults, these are for knowledge only do not use Wink

coolant cap removed, when it gets round to the rostrum that will be enough time to get the coolant boiling and thus pishing out all over the floor.

swap the plug lead order, make the car seem like it has a fecked engine.

hide the service history under the carpet/behind trim to make it look like it has none.

for the super brave, pan in the lights so it goes through an looks like its a stoler/joyridden.

Stand on exhaust tailpipe to snap the mounts and have it dragging, if your lucky you also get the exhaust roar.

Also the best tiome is right at the start and the very end to get a bargain.

Do not ever go to auctions with any sort of price guides, it screams out idiot amatuer and you will get done.

Be aware of indemnity charges, under 100 quid theres usually no indemnity charge, over a ton there is (say 20 quid), over 400 (50 quid) and so on, remember this when bidding, a 3 grand bargain is not so much a bargain when a 500 quid indemnity charge is slappe don top.

You need ID as well, a bill and license for example.

Also take a petrol can, they are normally drained of fuel when you get there, also a lot of the time they have neither tax or mot.

+ try taking someone who has been to or bid at an auction before, some people can get cught up in the atmosphere and pay more than they wanted to, also it can be hard to understand the auctioneer at first, as the lots can go very vey quick

very true, auction speak can be hard to pick up, especially if your not from the area!

Going to phone the auction house in the morning see if they can send me any photos or give me more info. Its a R19 RSI TD?? Never seen one. MOT til Sept. 146k on the clock. They don't give guide prices but they do list what cars have sold for in the past.

Don't know what to do at the moment. Do I get the car back here take the head off and check out the damage? Scrap it? Break it myself and donate the remains to the College Motor Vehicle Department? Break it and scrap whatever's left?

Looked at an Escort today, J reg badly modded, 1.4 lump has been unofficially replaced with a 1.8, bodywork needs attention. MOT'd til April 06, tax til end of Aug. Guy want's 100 for it, reckon he'll offer it up for Â£50 before the weeks out. There's also a Cavalier that I haven't seen yet advertised for 250 but has an ABS problem.

What to do????

lol you just scream not got a clue. they won't issue pics, only salvage auctions do that.

you can get rsi td's I would imagine, most are 1.8 MPI petrol lumps.

Also why would they give prices? Its an auction not a private sale! The car might be worth 20 quid but if theres enough idiots there it can go for a grand and break down before its out the yard.

get a decent mot'd and taxed car for under 300 easy these days, come down to the central belt see your mum and I will go round the auctions with you if you want.

LOL. Thought they might send me photo's given the distance problem. For various reasons it will be a good while before I can visit Mum and don't think I can wait that long to get a car.

Thanks for the offer I'll bear it in mind for the future, but think I'm going to have to sort out some cash and find something locally at least for now Sad

Got an email from the auction in Aberdeen the car is MOT'd til 23/09/2005 and is taxed til 30/11/2005. Seller has put a Â£475 reserve on it but "this is open to offers". Will wait and see if it's still there next week. My boy is due to go back to school next Tuesday so if it's still there might see if he can go a day early and go to the auction.

at some auctions you can buy with a warranty its a 1 hour jobby and you go for a test drive with a mechanic to make sure there aren't any major probs, if there are the onsite mechanic will either fix it or you get your money back. sold as seen on the other hand does exactly as it says on the tin so buyer beware!! I have brought cars sold as seen and not had any real problems, hope this helps.
