I might have some time to put the head back on the 16V this weekend (and put the engine back in too!).
Any advice on how tight the timing belt should be? I have only ever done this once before and that was on a 1.6 diesel Fiesta.
Or to be safe should I take the engine to a local garage to tighten the belt? |

tight enough.
Problem is everyone over tensions it.
it should be tight enough to twist it through 90 degrees between the idler and crank pulley.
If it makes a lot of whining noises especially on the over run its to tight. |

If you read the haynes manual they tell you that you should be able to twist the belt through roughly 45 degrees.. bit tight. Loosen it off until it sounds like it won't snap under strain/tension |

Ouch! You'd need a new timeingbelt. Try to feel how the Strain and tensions are running. If they slide fine let them stay on and loosen them up so you can fit the belt. In the Hayes Manual it shows where to put the marks ect on the veniers. The belt it self should be able to be pushed 3 mm +/- 0,5 mm.
Hehe pulled out my engine today... all alone in the garage. Damn it's heavy! Found out it's a 700 engine that was in the bay putting af 722 in the lump fra a 96 Clio only 50.000 miles on the clock. It's gonna be nice to get running again |
