My clio 1.2 was going fine a few weeks ago, and with it only being a 1.2 becuase of my age, i dont expect it to go faster then a microwave meal in the microwave, however, with a top speed of 105mph, my car now dosnt want to go above 70mph! and when it hits 70 it sounds like its going 300mph! the needle just stays on 70 and it wont go above that evan with the foot to the floor, im seriosly worried beacuse its also lost its acceleration power, it used to be pretty quick of the mark for a 1.2 but now it stutters and shakes and barely goes, i only had it serviced 1500 miles ago, so whats the problem?

anyone who can help me? much appreciated

Ant.

good effort, ive had 120 outa my 172, didnt want to go any faster, being a leaner an all!

umm, have you checked all the sensors? TPS, crank sensor is your best bet.

when you say it sounds like its doing 300 at 70, just exhaust noise or something engine related i.e rattles, knocks?

hello mate, well before when i drove at say 95mph it wud sound comfortabal coming from the engine, but now when it hits 70 its absolutly screaming from the exhaust and the engine, like its going to blow or something. Theres no rattling from the engine or anything like that, it just shakes a bit which is rare aswell, like i said it would comfotbly do 95 on the motorways, but it struggles at 70 now.

I took it to a local garage and they said ''oh yeh mate thats gonna need a new engine'' (muppet), yet i got back from london today to eastbourne and its been fine, apart from the speed thing??? wierd ay?

hmm, when my 19 packed up, i had noticed it was a bit reluctant to rev as quickly, then it was stalling as it came upto roundabouts, then it siezed solid as i was turning off a major road and got stuck in the middle!

Stutters and shakes and barely goes? That sounds like not firing on all cylinders to me. When one of the HT leads came loose on my 19, I started it up and it was 'shaky' and I knew straight away that was the problem like. Didn't even try to drive the car like it, I just had a look to see what was wrong and luckily it was simple; just plug the lead back in. Check your leads. Might be something simple like that. That would explain the sluggishness and not wanting to go above 70mph too methinks.

this could be so many things!

1st make sure the oil and coolant levels are bang on.

Then check the vacuum pipes from the rocker ccover and especially the pipe from the map sensor (on the drivers side suspension turret). If these are split tape em up or replace them.

Check the ht leads as si said.

Does it rev up ok when the cars sitting still? Can you rev it right round to the limiter or does it pop and bang when you try and throttle it?

Hi guys, just checked my HT leads and there all fine, alos checked all the pipes and there fine too.

when the car is standing and i rev it is misfires a tiny bit at first then goes straight up through the revs, when the revs come back down, it pops and bangs, but don't know if this is just becuase of the exhaust?.

Might take you up on that offer mate if it continues, as seaford is only round the corner from me Smile
