to coin a phrase made famous by the Quo, i was shown a neat web-based program called Google Earth. No doubt there is bound to be someone on here thats already heard of it/has it, but assuming not many know of it, this is what it is...
Basically, there is Google Earth (free), GE Plus ($20) and GE Pro ($400). The free version is about 10Mb to download and once downloaded to your computer, and you start the program it connects with Google HQ (i assume) and you can roam a 3D representation of the Earth, zoom in, zoom out, and focus in on cities, towns, villages or a lone phone box 3 miles down the road from you.
Its pretty cool and well worth a look. I'm on 56k dial-up so it takes a little while for the screen resolution to alter and for you to get a decent picture of what ur looking at...but seeing how most of you lot are on broadband, there won't be much trouble there
http://earth.google.com/
ROCK ON!!
Just noticed that if you type in a place name, it'll find it for you and automatically zoom into it |

maps.google.com is pretty much all the same without the need to download the software....uses the same satellite imagery anyway.
it is good. i can see my individual house...
weird that swansea has high resolution but cardiff doesnt...wonder how they chose. |

1 thing thats crap is you can get mountains etc in, even building in some places but no eifel tower standign up or statue of liberty etc.
Its still pretty smart but would be bette rif it was more accuate, I assume the expensive version you can aks a satelite to go look for you!?! |
