 Laguna 1.8RT poor starting

Hi,

Can anyone advise please, I have a 1.8 RT Laguna, 1995 8 valve, it's a real bugger to start when cold, (battery tested ok as realitively new) it turns ok but very reluctant to start, when it catches if you dont blip the throttle it cuts out again right away, you have to "persuade" it for a minute or so then it runs, although erratic on revs, between 1000 & 16000, sounds lumpy for a while after starting. It drives ok & not sluggish but can cut out when pulling up, it will (normally) start again straight away but it's a real pain.
A couple of times it has refused to restart after a short journey (10 miles or so) all the dash lights come on, nothing dims when the key is turned but the engine will not turn over. It hasn't got hot but you have to leave it for half an hour or so before retrying & then it starts, oh & it's really thirsty, 40ish miles to £10 of fuel
Any help would be really appreciated (hope I've given enough info!!)

coolant temperature sensor and the lambda sensor as well if i am right

thanks for your reply,
sorry to sound a bit thick but could you advise on the Lambada sensor, what does it do & where is it? the temp sender on the side of the radiator has been renewed about 3 months ago which made no difference

It's not the coolant temp sensor on the side of the radiator, that's the thermostatic switch for the fan.

i have a reanult 19 1.8rt ,the same engine as yours and my temp sensor is on the engine head .its got a white square plug. this sensor gives the water temp information to the e.c.u and this info affects the amount of fuel that goes into the manifold,so if yours is buggered it will give trouble cold starting .

the lambda(oxygen) sensor is located just before the catalytic convertor on the exhaust pipe.cant explain what it does exactly but it affects hot starting in a very bad way . chris can give you a better explanation of this

The lambda in no way at all, at any time, on any car in the entire universe can affect it starting.

lambda only affects anything when its up to normal operating temp. Dodgy coolant temp sedner will not let it operate as if it was at normal op temp thus high consumption and poor starting, so its ignored.

Its a secondary input rather than a primary like CTS, TPS, MAP, and crank position.

so TPS,CTS,CAS will over rule the lambda in any operating temp yeah ?
