im gunna do my own head skim....any objections to leaving the valves in? they are about 2mm down so unless i do a horrendously deep cut resulting in 15:1 odd comp i think it wil be ok.

it should be happenin tonight...watch this space for pics later...will either be nice raw surface or a fucked head with big gouges where the cutter caught it and flung it across the workshop...lol...but hopefully not eh./
this head i think is not likely to see service again tho...so just gunna use it for practising stuff on. |

make a decision, if your gonna use it then do it carefully, if your gonna just play with it, chop the thing in half.
Cut through a port etc, learn something from it. |

I have done it. Aluminium is easy, try doing it on a cast iron head!
Anyway you get to see the water ways, oil channels and the ports. |

another thing i heard of for similar stuff is to fill the ports with latex or silicon or something, let it go off and pull it out and u got a nice rubber mould of the port to look at....i guess this would be good for working ports, gettin them all equal...just being able to see whats goin on inside. |

problem is getting the silicone out, it tears.
The 16V head is cack tbh.
If I was designing it then I would probably gain another 10 or so horses and a good bit more torque and that would be before any hand fettling.
Main problem is the 2 inlet valves per cylinder do not flow the same amount.
Lots of probs with the head, its not that good. |

and this is whats left of the corner where the bolt snapped...can see the shape of the hole is still bad and the grooves are still visible even after the skim!

looks like you made 2 passes at it with the cutter as well, which is not ideal, but looks like you got a nice result.
Mine had a bit of corrosion still evident in exactly the same place, but as the corrosion coincides with the edge of the block anyway, it really makes no odds. As long as it seals round the necessary places, i figured all would be well, and it has... |

we got a little workshop in work...simple milling machine, lathe, metalworking stuff....so i can just popp in ther in the evenings to do stuff. dead handy.
yeah 0.7 is a chunk but like i said i was just havin a go..not necessarily gunna use it. if i do hopefully ill be havin 11:1 fun but hopefully without goin pinkpink
Youre right neal i did have to make 2 passes cos the cutter i got is only 4" which isnt enough to do it in 1 pass...plus due to the size of the bed i could only do it by clamping on the top of the head so had to do one half move clamps and do other half...
still the mark you see is just a visual thing...cant feel it with your finger so it would be fine... |
