Chris,

I managed to crack the crank shaft pulley bolt on Saturday. I tried the 4th gear, foot on brake tip but it wasn't having any of it Embarassed I did find that the G8T has a nice cover at the bottom of the crank itself which once removed allows the weging of a great flat screwdriver! Once I got the pulley off the problem of why the cam belt had become slack and sliped was obvious... the water pump jockey wheel had sheered completely!!

I've got some pics of it at home so will post them later but thankfully it only slipped a few teeth so i've put in a new pump, cambelt kit and re-timed the cam the injector pump but it was a close call and i hope the valves have survived. She struck up again yesterday afternoon and took it for a nice little run but the temp guage is playing silly beggars as it likes to drop from normal operating temp (half way) to the first 1/4 and then back to normal every now and again. Sound like a faulty temp sender to you or something a little darker and more sinister maybe?

Thanks for the tips!

where abouts was the cover? At the front of the block or on the bottom in the gap?

Anyway did the spindle shear or did the impellar come off the shaft and allow it to move out?

Did you flush the system and use a new stat?

If so then its probably fine.

Unless its doing it every few seconds1 Give the wire a wiggle or get Leanne to waggle it and keep an eye on the guage

Chris, the cover was at the bottom, rear of the crank...two 10mm bolts and it was off and the screw driver was in! It was the spindle itself and when you see the pics later it will show everyone why you should change water pumps whilst getting the cam belt changed!

I didn't change the stat but TBH i was worried that it might have caused the HG to fail but she's not loosing water and it gets warm, fans kick in etc so might try changing the stat to for good measure when i refill with anti-freeze! (Didn't wanna refill with the good stuff straight away in case it was bolloxed)

I'll also give the temp sender/connector some attention with the wire wool and some contact grease. Changing the actual cambelt tensioner was fun though with the engine in the bay... nearly lost my bloody fingers and i'll never see the great idea with those auto tensioners that Renault use on the A/C equiped cars cos they're nothign but trouble to fully retract!

which tensioner was it, theres 2 auto tensioners, theres the hyraulic cylinder one which should be changed to the later simpoler round one with the V like the vauxhalls use.

run it a bit longer and see how it goes.

It's the stupid wheel attached to what looks like a spring type damper which keeps the aux belt stupidly tight. Seeing as the Aux belt decided to shred itself last night i've got to replace it so i'll get some pics of that whilst i'm at it!

I use a 3/8's 2 inch extension on the ratchet to turn it, saves buying a 10mm key!

I think I have pics of it in chr's project cars and project hairdresser.

Oh it seized good and proper when Leanne was coming to my house one night which is out in the middle of nowhere. AA man offered to drive her to a garage 5 miles up the road and leave her there to sort it as her cover was pretty basic.... I felt like linching the cunt for that!

TBH, the car came for £400 and it's cost us about £300 in repairs since then so I still think it's a good car for the cash... 2.2TDi Laguna I Exec with every toy Renault had at the time fitted and with the exception of the Aux belt shredding a few nights ago seems to be happy with the new water pump and cam belt. Still, I guess it was just luck that the belt stayed on and only slipped a few teeth with the loss of tension due to the jockey wheel coming away. Could have been a new lump job!

RSC has now been sorted to... One of the gerbils powering the wheel had died so we've replaced it and we're now back to normal. I guess I should feed them every now and again Embarassed

Mick

£700 for a 2.2 TDi is a decent enough price when you consider the muppet that is my sister threw £800 at her maroon 2l 8 v that needed lots of work!

Hoipefully thats it sorted now though eh!

Big bay they have don't they!

will try rsc again, need to abuse the lesser beings.

Big bays indeed... shame the G8T760 pretty much fills it with Turbo and EGR pipework.

Something in the back of my mind is telling me to keep an eye on the head gasket though as I noticed that the gasket joint appeared to have what looked like white block sealant residue all over the face so i'm wondering if someone has bodged a head gasket repair at some point to which might explain the tempremental/flickering temp guage! Even if it needa head gasket it's still a cheap motor and not too bad to drive either. Wouldn't have paid £23k for it new like but still a nice comfy motorway cruiser!

where re the marks? side (belt end) or the back? if they are at the front then somethings cracked more than likely

The marks looked to be on the timing belt side but I couldn't tell if it was from above or below the gasket but i couldn't see any signs of leaking. Surely if the block or head had cracked then a block sealant would be no good?

depends on the crack really.

if its on the belt side it might be a core plug.

Core plugs... I know what they are now !! Embarassed

I'm no doubt going to be under the bonet this weekend anyway so i'll check them out to. How hard are these to replace if it is a core plug?

easy enough. just need to bash it in the way on a side which will spin it round then you can pull it out.

bang in the new one, use blue hylomar or something on it as well just to be sure.
