now before forking out the hard earned cash to buy one tomorrow ,i want to make sure the battery is really buggered rather than being in need of topping up or a faulty alternator etc .

what can i look for ?

also in case i have to buy a new one ( never done before and dont know how it works ) . is it like ,go to the shop buy new battery ,stick it on the car and drive away or is it a bit more complicated that ,the battery needs an initial charging etc before fitment?????????

you just buy the battery, stick it in and away you go. It will be charged and will start the car straight from the shop. If it doesn't, it is fucked and you dont want it, get a refund.

righteo , cheers neal .

the haynes does not mention anything about the specific battery to with the valver , i remember chris was saying a 600a battery would do the job nicely ,is that the optimum battery to buy ?

Higher the ampage the better really. The battery in my valver cost about 25 quid from some place near York.

25 quid is not bad at all ,was that one of them once in a lifetime bargains or are they about that price?

It came from a local motorfactors, own branded "Drivemaster" I think - £25, had a few quite good batterys. Bosch Silver Tops are good little batterys too.

ok ,i decided to post on this thread about my starting problems ratehr than feckin somebody elses thread .

chris ,i have been to halfords today and they connected that stuff on my battery ,i have seen the reading from the thing myself .
265 amps ,the battery is a 620 amp battery
it also read 12,37v
and on the screen it said "change battery" cool machine Smile
until i realised it was referring to a halfords battery obviously Smile they offered me 2 different ones ,one is a 300 cold cranking amp one and the other 400 , are not they a bit low being 380-400 while the one o my balck rt was a 620 amp???????

anyway prices were 40 and 60 quid for these 2 batteries, did not buy any of them .

now how does this theory sound like ????????

the battery was duff in the first place ,giving a reading of 265 amps ,i put it in the valver and used it for 2 months having problems starting up when hot and started up after a few cranks when cold (cause the battery was low ) . but today again after a 5 minute drive i turned ther engine off and parked came back after an hour it started after a few cranks (which means alternator is doing some work )
also when it was not starting up i put jump leads on there from my neighbours car and started up straight away

so after all this am i right thinking
the battery is duff
alternator is working fine
and the starter is fine when a new battery is fitted
