Hi. Can anyone (??Chris H) help me with the following engine rebuild. Im looking for somewhere in scotland, that can do me a full engine rebuild among other things. Its a F7R by the way!
http://www.renaultsportsclub.co.uk/forum_3403/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=38065
Full engine rebuild (replacing any worn components)
Gasflow cylinder head
Port polish cylinder head
Skim cylinder head
??Forged pistons
Match Inlet and Exhaust Manifolds
Performance cams (perhaps 270 or 275's)
Vernier timing pulleys
Balance bottom end
Lighten flywheel
Performance clutch
Standalone ECU (Omex or similar)
Remap with new ECU
Recondtioned Willy gearbox (currently only have 16v box)
Williams wide track conversion (Driveshafts, Wishbones etc)
Suspension - AVO Coilovers to fit wide track
Brakes - Wilwood 4 pots, 280mm discs, fast road pads
New aux components (radiator, battery, pas pump, water pump, starter motor etc etc)
New silicon hoses
Alloy header tank
Some kind of decent oil cooler (for track day use especially!)
Powdercoating of all engine and gearbox components (inlet manifold, rocker cover, bottom end, cylinder head, gearbox casing etc)
Basically I want a new engine with about 185-190BHP, something that is going to run track days with a breeze, and be reliable (or reliable as possible from a renault!!)
Obviously the willy gearbox would be par for the course, and the wide track a sensible time to upgrade. 4 pot brakes would then be needed for the increased power, and renewing all other components as percausion and to make sure everything is new when the engine is put back in!
Also any recomendations for other things that can be done to the engine, or things that should be done differently? |

yes I can do it.
headwork no bother.
forged pistons supply me and i will fit them.
inlets and exhaust no bother.
cams again no bother supply them to me.
pullies no bother.
balance and lighten fly/bottom end no bother but will have to farm that out but I will build the engine up.
Clutch no bother will fit along with the willy box.
ECU i should be able to get a start up map then be able to tweak it so its pretty driveable but will need setting up on the rollers after (AVA is near to me, glasgow airport).
Wide tracks not a problem either nor is brakes and suspension.
the new aux bits as long as you supply them will be no issue as the lump will be out and stripped anyway.
Oil cooler, depends on what you want.
Powder coating, erm no.
Inlet manifold and rocker cover should not be a problem, everything else won't get done it won't last and no where I have ever heard of would even take it on. Good old fashioned paint.
Other things depending on wear, maybe new oil pump, senders etc etc
No TB's due to money/insurance reasons?
Where you based? Scotland I know, but where? |

Ok. Thats a great start Chris! Cheers!
Im studying at uni in edinburgh, but live in kirriemuir (20mins north of dundee!)
Glasgow aint a problem at all? Which side? Where?
As for powdercoating - well either that or paint! Just something that will last, and look new-like!
A few technical questions though :
Is it worth getting forged pistons? Advantages? Price range (are they expensive)?
Balancing bottom end - worth it? Again - expensive?
Ive heard that lightening the flywheel at least is a good start, but more info would be great.
Can you supply things like willy gearbox, wide track? What about aux pumps - can you get them or would i have to?
I can get all other parts like coilovers, brakes, radiator, hoses, header tank.
Is it worth getting TB's? Are they mega expensive? Would it be best to get a LSD , sequential box etc, running that kinda power..... (Thats why i didnt wanna do down that route just yet!)
Anything else that you would recommend?
It would be great if you could give me a rough price range for this kinda work....
Cheers. |

It would be a shame not to get TB's if going that far
Pistons range from 400-800 uk£ made to your (or chris's ) spec
LSD is not really and option. avanti do one for 1k but then you have to buy special shafts. Quaife don't do an ATB unfortunately
Balancing is always a good idea, balance everything while you can |

I am the paisley end.
Since your studying in edinburgh, i assume your there at the moment?
If so on thursday me and the mrs are off for a walk round crammond island (near the forth rail bridge) and plan to get something to eat and see soneji there later rtc.
So wanna meet up and have a chat face to face about it? I can even drag docs head over to show you some of my headwork if you want.
forged pistons, higher CR ratio, more power, better throttle response and economy if it all works in harmony! They are expensive though.
Balancign bottom end, yes its worth it, it makes it smoother and you can really notice the change in smoothness, they are not the best balanced cranks fromt he factory. Expensive, around a ton or so normally.
Lightenign the flywheel, its already pretty light, which is why they rev quickly, a wee bit more off it won;t affect driveability much and a nice skim of the clutch face will be nice for a new clutch. its not needed, but recommened if you yget he crank done, or do the flywheel and leave the crank if thats to dear, you will get some benefit with the fly gettign done.
Willy box etc will probably be as hard for me to get as for mate, and tbh I could do without the hassle at the mo, got all sorts going on, like finished doc's head, got u33db's head comign soon and so on!
TB's can be expensive, although sometimes you get bargains like stan did. Have a word with stan, he might be able to source you some TB's reasonably priced.
Craigs (evis), martin, etc don't run lsd's and for the cash I wouldn't say its worth it. But tbh ask them, see if they feel their cars would be noticeably better with one. 0.2sec on the strip ISN'T worth it!
price, dunno 'll dream up a nice expensive quote for you in the hope you say yes, so to start the bidding £1,000,000 lol only kidding dunno will need to work it out really.
but if I can meet with you then that would be great as its easier talking face to face and if the cars there even better, I can assess if I need a priest or not! Some of these cars will not loosen their bolts unless some divine intervention occurs! |

quaiffe don;t but whathispuss makes then for the 5gtt so it will go in a 16V and is around 700 quid I believe. |

Have a look at some of the pics on there mate, its an engine ive just built for my clio. pistons werent too bad, and like Chet/Chris have said, if your going to the effort/expensive of having a decent build, you may as well make it properly decent.
I do actually have a spare pair of Jenvey 45mm bodies. they are just the castings, and would require accessories (butterflies/linkage/seals etc etc) at a cost of around £100 from Jenvey. but it would mean you would have a T.B set-up at the fraction of the "usual" price....talk it through with Chris first |

Chris - im a bit busy on thurs! will be in uni all day!
Don't think ill bother with TB's, just an added expensive.
LSD seems like a waste of time as well.
forged pistons are probably not necessary for what i need.
All i want is something that will last the abuse of track days (hence why i reckon ill need a good oil cooler - oil seems to get really hot when thrashing for a few laps!) and high-ish revs, while producing around 190BHP. Is this a realistic figure to be looking at? Any other work you would suggest to make the engine better?
As for the willy box, i could probably get one, but would need it recon, so not sure about that. Probably easiest if you were to cover that end of things.
If you can PM me with a rough price for everything then that would be great. I'm not needing this done till early next year, after xmas and new year, so there is no rush. Just trying to cost up what is needed etc, and where i could get the work done.
Im just really glad that you could do the work - was thinking id have to go down to england for the work to be done!
Cheers. |

thurs night mate? liek I said I will be seeing soneji which won';t be happening to later on as hes working. Sp shoudl be flexible on thurs if its cool.
190 is realistic with the mods.
As for th ebox, well a recon ren unit isn;t to dear, and getting a box and then having it reconned is prob gonna cost more than going to ren! See about getting a low miler, most are ok tbh.
will pm you at some point when I have a ponder |
