Sorry this isn't a Renault related question, but you are the most knowledgeable guys I know when it comes to cars, so opinions from you would be very useful! Basically, a mate is r-building his honda prelude engine after it blew up, and we got it finished yesterday, lookin all nice.....
......it starts like a legend, but the only problem is, it sounds like this......

I know this is a bit of a daft question, as recordings of things like this always make them sound worse than they actuall are etc, but we both reckon it shouldn't sound like this! And, the guys on the honda forum seem to be a bit daft tbh, so I thought I'd ask you lot. Does anything obvious spring to mind? Does it sound like anything in-particular to you? See, we dunno if it's normal for a 'fresh' engine to sound like this for a while, and then it'll settle down, or is there actually something wrong with it like. We did the valve clearances again just to double check, and they are all fine now but noise is still there. Sounds like something tappet-related to me......but then I know nothing!
Cheers guys |

when they filled the block they may have filled/blocked an oil gallery, whats the oil level like?

He's using cheap oil to run it in. 10w 30 if I remember rightly, not sure tho. The oil level is fine yeah, up just under max before we started it. The underneath of the rocker cover had a lot of oil on it when we took it back off to do the valve clearances again, so some oil is getting up there at least. But I didn't have a detailed look at the underside of the rocker cover, I spoze that oil on it could've been there from ages ago like. I know there was oil on it tho.
Actually, thinkin about it.......I dunno is oil gettin up there. Cuz when we took my rocker cover off ages ago to do my rocker cover gasket, I remember everything was nicely covered in oil like. But his cams etc weren't as obviously covered in oil as mine were hmmm |

Sorry, forgot to mention.......no he hasn't driven it yet. We were going to, but we weren't sure about driving it when it sounded like this y'know. Don't wanna damage it further if there is something wrong |

it does sound very dry, check to make sure everything is on where it should be i,.e the rockers are on the valves and not the springs, check the clearences set it all to 10 thou as a good figure and see if it quieten things down a little, and whilst the cover is off, pour some oil on the cams and the rockers to help it if it isnt covered in oil. |

its sounds like a v8 is a manifold done up tight along with the down pipe it should sound very different to that even if it has been re built |

Yeah it does sound like a diesel lol. It wouldn't say it sounded like a V8 with a manifold off, cuz it's a mechanical noise. Something knockin against something like, not just something blowing. But.....I dunno! We confirmed today that oil IS getting up there fine, so it's not a lack of oil problem. Well, it wouldn't appear so anyway. |
