 Thrust bearing?

I think the thrust bearing is going on my clio - I get a screeching noise sometimes when changing gear. How much is a garage likely to charge me to replace this including parts? how much extra would it cost to get a new bearing put in whilst getting this done?

Is it a very difficult job or could I possibly try it myself? I know it's a gearbox off job but don't know if that would be very difficult to do given that I've never had to take a gearbox off a car before.

My car is a clio Mk1 Ph2 1.4RT BTW (1.4 energy engine)

dont even know what a trust bearing is tbh mate
otherwise i would try and make up an "out of ass" quick solution

you have to crack the sump off i know that! it sits on the sides of number 2 main bearing so to speak on the F7P so its not a 5 minute job but not the most taxing of jobs

right the thrust bearings are in the engine on the crank like rich says.,

However some 'people' call the clutch release bearing the thrust bearing.

if you mean the clutch release bearing then gearbox off.

Yeah sorry I mean the clutch release bearing - people have been calling it the thrust bearing when telling me what it is but I'll know not to now Wink

Is it a pretty difficult job to get the gearbox off without removing the engine? I've read through the haynes guide and TBH it doesn't look too bad but I just thought I would get some opinions from people who have done it.

piece of piss tbh! yeah its tight but you did buy a renault! so long as you can slide enough room to get the bearing off of the pin no need for all the engine out jobby

LOL, I suppose I should have been more specific about what I mean by hard.

Basically am I likely to be able to do it bearing in mind I don't have much experience working with engines etc - but I've got plenty interest and willing to have a go. So far on the car I have I've fitted a cat back exhaust and decat, put a new rocker gaskert on it, done spark plugs etc for a basic service and I've replaced the hub on the car. I'm usually OK at doing whats needed on the car but I've not done anything like taking the gearbox off before.

Is it possible to just move the gearbox to the side to get to the release bearing? I know it says in the haynes you can do this for the Clio 16v but it doesn't say you can for the 1.4 Clio.

Also, does anyone know how much the gearbox weighs roughly?

I think I first of all need to clear out my garage as I can't be arsed working on the drive now as it's too cold, lol.

yes you can move it over but you need to support the engine etc and be mindful of the linkage rod.

gear box is about 35kg's

when was your clutch last changed might be worth gettin it done too as theres no point changing the release bearing then few mths down like have clutch probs

I was planning on doing that mate if the car went to a garage to get it done as I wouldn't want to have to fork out again in a couple of months. If I was doing it myself I think I would just do the release bearing though.

I might not have to do it though if I put a 1.8RSi engine in my car though.

How long should it take someone who knows the job to do it? so that I can multiply that time by about 10 for me to do it LOL.

i would imagin a couple of hrs if they no what they are doing, i find that going to a clutch only place is a bit chepare plus 9 out of 10 do no what theyare doing too

Having read some older posts on here and elsewhere it seems as though usually when the release bearing needs replaced there is a constant noise to be heard when dricing the car.

On mine I only get the screeching noise if I pull away sharply or over rev during gear changes - does that sound like it will be the realease bearing or is it likely to be something else?

If I try this myself I know that I would have to support the engine with a jack which wouldn't be aproblem but what about the gearbox when moved to the side - should I support that from a hoist of some sort or what is the best way to do it?

If I wanted to replace the clutch at the same time would the whole gearbox need to be removed in order to give sufficient access rather than just moving it to the side?

ok does your car rattle when u take your clutch peddle down???? then when u in gage clucth it goes quite??? cause this is what mine doe sand i have been told its release bearing

Brad - sorry mate I'm not entirely sure of what you mean but from what i have understood of what you said mine does not really seem to do that.

I have had the noise for a while now but it doesn't seem to be getting any worse and the clutch bites fine and doesn't seem to slip at all. You only really hear the noise when you overrev on a gear change - i.e. go back on the accelerator to match the revs but actually rev it above where it settles when the clutch is released.

what i ment was when take foot of clutch there is a rrattle then when u press clutch pedel to floor rattle goes away

doezs it sound like a mettel rattle?????

I don't get that sort of rattle Brad - at least not that i have noticed. No rattles at all just a sort of screeching noise occasionally.
