If it needs MOT just prebook one with your local tester before you pick it up, that's what I did with the Clio when I fetched it back from Scotland.

All depends how far the car has to go, how bad the driveshaft is and how dangerously you like to live!

about 130 miles away from me i am afraid .
if the car is driveable swap your insurance on to it and prebook an mot test as ben said . and drive back with 50 mph on the left lane.
