Help
My Phase 1 chammy has just failed it's MOT. My brother can do most of it but we're stuck with the handbrake. The fail sheet says that the handbrake efficiency is below 49%. Can someone point me in the direction onhow to fix this?

49% isn't a failt, has to be below 25% effiecient.
Anyway dependign on drums or discs theres 2 ways. I done a tech article on changing rear pads which talks abotu the handbrake mechanism on the rear disc models.
if its drums get back to us and I will guide you through it. |

He's a star ain't he. Has spent his last 4 or 5 weekends working on this for me.
Car in question had been sat idle for nearly six months and we got it for nothing coz the guy couldn't be bothered.
Can u believe he stuck the nasty fake bonnet vents on UPSIDEDOWN. Huwbie spent most of last weekend sanding down the filler on the bonnet so i don't get laughed at while i'm driving it.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated. I ok at hoovering the inside but that's about as technical as i get.

what was the footbrake reading?
If the footbrake reading was ok then it may eithe rbe a frayed cable or a siezed pivot.
Anyway the drum has to come off. Yopu will then see the shoes and self adjusters, remove the shoes, the handbrake pivot on the rear shoe, see how easy it is to pivot, it shoudl be free, if stiff work wd-40 into it then when its free smear copper grease all over it.
The self adjusters will more than likely be siezed. You need to free these off, take care not to damage the teeth on the adjuster wheel. unscrew the wheel and clean the threads on the self adjuster, lightly oil them then work the wheel up and down.
Do this both sides.
adjust the shoes manually until the drum just goes on. then when the drums on press the footbrake lots.
Then try the handbrake, it should feel pretty good.
if the cables are knackered then you have to replace them which is pretty easy. |
