Thinking out loud here and any sensible suggestions welcomed! Its a long one but any suggestiosn would be helpful.

Problem suspected headgasket problem.

Evidence, expansion tank and cooling hoses filled with grey gunge and cylinder 2 spark plug heavily contaminated.

Driveability, poor, eventually after maybe 10 mins of total running a total reluctance to fire up.

No sign of smoke from exhaust when running, revved or driven for the brief period it did drive.

Head off. Piston number 2 slightly clean like the way a blown headgasket will make a piston clean. Chamber 2 wet and strange build up of contaminants.

Water pump bolts to head (yes I know pillocks), sludges but now clean, no where near oilways.

Headgasket, appears fine, errosion to the gasket around the water ways but no clear breach of fire ring or water and oil ways.

Head cleaned, not cracked but again caked with sludge. Head now cleaned and nothing visible damage wise to any ports or chambers. Only 1 oil feed to head via the end headbolt directly via diagonal drilling to rocker chaft pedastal. no oil - water way breach from single feed.

Wet liner engine so no core plugs on the block, extreme amounts of sludge in the bottom end. Only way I can think of to remove all the sludge is either something poured in to break it down and copious amounts of flushing when head is replaced. Removing engine and liners is not a viable option at the moment!

Cylinder 2 liner undamaged, protudes from the block as designed. All other liners also undamaged.

Oil goes from pump to the main bearings and the camshaft which runs along the front of the block. The camsghaft journals are in the right area in regards to the blocks water jacket. Possible crack here. Doubtfull but possible. No way to tell again without stripping engine.

Other option, some fool poured engine oil accidentally into the expansion tank. Doesn't explain the build up on spark plug number 2 and its combustion chamber.

Other option, muppet poured in oil to expansion tank headgasket gone on cyl 2 slightly the gunge in the coolign system caused build up on plug. And made worse due to the fact the ignition system isn; tin that great a condition.

Other option again, head gasket blown, block cracked between cam oil way and water jacket.

Thoughts anyone?

if it was a customers car it would be either engine strip or engine swap. budget for this cos its mine is £0

its still out the back!

Thing is like I said before I would need to go and buy a 1.4 rt clio, need the loom and so on to get it running.

Theres also no water contamination of the oil.

I just pulled the rotor arm off, tip to cenrtre was infinityy. now its 1.1 ohm.

New arm methinks, its kiinda burnt.

nope, I have a full carbed energy out the back!

i assume the lee never sold then?

Worst comes to the worst then I'll have to rip the engine out of project Y as its the same engine and drop that into the 5.

Then I'll have to either 16V the Y or 1.4 energy it.

I was planning on turboing it, gtt style as it has a gtt lump in there minus the turbo bit! lol I was even gonna bid on a gtt zorst manifold for it but forgot to, looked at my watched items and it had just sold for 25 quid! grr

Righty what do we thinsk more likely someones tipped oil into the expansion tank or the blocks cracked?

The expansion tank was pretty full of the gunge btw

I'd like to think that noone is stupid enough to put oil in the expansion tank, but we all know that's not the case.

Doing that wouldn't explain the whole cylinder 2 contamination issue though, so cracked block looks more likely

yeah but neal sits a wet liner engine this means that cyl 2 is seperatyed by both the oil and water. Only weay for water to get to it is via the gasket. The liners undamaged.

So the gasket being duff (thinking about the rusty headbolts supports this actually) means that water got into the cyl via the gasket not leaving much evidecne. Head is fine btw.

Only leaves the water jacket problem.

Oil pressure in a runnign engine is always higher than the water pressure. However a hot engioen turned off will retain pressure in the coooling system, but the oil pressure will fade away, that would then say that water would get in the oil from a cracked block.

Hmm, tricky this be.

speaking of water in the steering, that hatch had no lid on the ps and they pumped it out, whats left is bright pink thanks to water contamination.

Righty boys, what will break up oily gunge but not damage the rubber seals at the base of the liners!?!

carb cleaner is expensive, dunno how it would work in water either, if it floats its no use.

I thought acetone as I have a load of it but might damage the seals.

i could use the aquawash (orange piss stuff you saw at mine) that will mix in with it.

Cillit bang? Razz

Now you mention the pinkness i can remember the car i seen with the water in it. Was a 93 ph2 chammy 1.4, crey with a non standard rear spoiler. Lovely driver but very bad compression. Noisey ps pump too Rolling Eyes

try and find it for bits for hannas!

cillit bang shoudl do it, just need somethign that will mix with water.

I sued the pressure washer on the coolign hoses (all 4 of them! lol) and that sorted out most of the gunge in them.

I was only thinking about finding it, she used to see it when she was first coming over and said it was the same colour as hers. I think it might still be one of ours

well this is strange, the heads definately not cracked anywhere near cyl2?
the block itself is ok isnt it?, id go with the h/g having a hairline crack in it, have you checked the coolent hoses chris?are they gresy like oil?if so u know the muppet has poured oil in the tank.ive never come across oily sludge even when i was working at ford. have a compression test done on aswell that might giveyou a better picture, when you took the head off did you replace the h/g on it or use the same one?

if the head was cracked at 2 is wouldn't get oil etc into it! As the oilway is on the far end of cyl 1 to the rocker pedastal, straight drilling you can see through and its not iffy looking.

Heads still off, not got the gasket yet!

Will see what happens when I put it all back together and run it.

It was awfull when I took the head off yesterday, ported it as well! lol

Porting always shows up any cracks that you can see when you first clean it.
