Hi,
When driving my williams in a straight line, there is alot of play with the steering wheel. Decided to let a garage look at it for me and they said that the rack was buggered and they wouldn't know where to start looking for one. Finally got one for it and decided to have a go at it myself. When i came to the universal joint, i found that the steering column end is loose where it attatches to the joint and not my rack that was the problem.
Is this a common problem with the Williams? if so is there a quick fix so i don't have to put another joint on? and if i have to how much should it cost?

Its a common problem with all MK1 clios.
Most are welded or as Chris H does, puts shims in it.
If you look IN CHR Project Cars, and then, Gentle Ben's Ph1 Clio 16v there is a couple of pictures of it.
AFAIK the Universal joints arent availiable on their own, which is why they are welded. |

Hmm, i've got a similar thing where the wheel moves about 1/2 and inch to and inch before the wheels do much...sort of removes that direct feeling with the wheels. |

could be a worn track rod, my 19 was like that, but as soon as i replaced it it was fine |

welding or shimming does the job nicely.
yes the 19 suffers but nowhere near as badly as the clio does. |
