Seeing as the headgasket appears to be leaking a little oil (can't be much at all as the oil level is still slightly over MAX) and I'm an unlucky fucker I've got a quote for having a little overhaul done on her.

Basicaly having a new cambelt kit fitted, headgasket and other gaskets on the engine fitted and a 2002 Megane 1.6 16v gearbox, all parts and labour £650.

The price breakdown is as follows:

Cambelt kit: £100
Head gasket and engine gaskets: £70
Megane gearbox (22,000 miles): £175
Then labour £305

That includes the oil for the box too.

Does that sound fair? Although the headgasket is a bit of a shady are as the header tank is oil free and oil level has hardly dropped since I topped it up, yet I go out to find a patch of oil about the size of a tea mug in diameter under the car, yet if I park facing up a hill, there isn't any (or, not as much)

And will the Meggy box fit? He says he thinks it's some type of JB3 varient alhtough hasn't actualy checked. It's from a 2002 model (1.6 16v) and is surely going to be stringer than one of the old boxes.

What do you guys recon? Leave HG till it's serious and get box done? Or go somewhere else?

Cheers.

Ok, but y'al live too far from me Sad

Why; do most garages do it wrong?

What about the box Chris? That seem fair? The idea is a stronger box that will last. How about ratios etc?

Cheers.

most garages leave out this that and the other in my expeeience as well as break bit.

why change the box for one thats not any stronger?

you need a jc5 not another jb3 derivitive, whats wrong with your box?

Hmms but where can I get a JC5 from? Williams only aren't they? Also they're probably be on 70k+ miles.

Well he said it was a JB3, but tbh I don't know 100%, I just thought, newer box = more life in it.

My current box is just a bit crappy. Whines a bit, sometimes hard to select first and reverse sometimes crunches. Not a nice box really.

a box with 10 miles on it is just as likely to die as one with 100k on it.

keep the box you have until it goes bang which it might never do.

my chammys box jumps out of second but I can wheelspin it all day if I want it won;t pop a clip, other boxes will pop it treatign it gently

What about you? Laughing

I've never said deffo to either yet. This place is handy as my dad knows them and they're local, but then they're general mechanics, whereas you know about Renaults.
