Hi i'm interested in fitting the 285mm R21 (2L n/a 4stuf) onto my 1.4RT. Reasons are:
1.4 brakes are crap
I'm thinking of upgrading the engine in the future
They look better
Will fill my 17's a bit more
Someone on cliosport said this has been covered over here? I've been told this is all the KTEC big brake kit is? But if I got the calipers and carriers what else would I need to do or do KTEC make bespoke brakets for their brakes?
thanks. |

should be a straight swap, but tbh just go with 16V gear, cheap for parts and brake well.
Even the stock 1.4 girlings are a massive improvement over the crappy 1.4 bendix calipers. |

Straigt swap? :o Wow can anyone confirm this then?
Well my gf's dad works at a motorfactors so I can get disks and pads for pence anyway.
The 16v's i'm sure are good but why not slap the 285mm on while you are at it? |

the early girling efforts should be a straight swap off the 21, the hub spacing ont eh bolts is the same on the early ones, they have a gay bearign size though pointless fact and nothign to do with this thread at all that. |

Cheers Chris.
Right so does the bearing size affect the fitment at all? Or is it just a pain in the arse?
So if you could get these brakes would you pick them over the 16v units? If not why?
Just to reiterate, i would need:
The Calipers
The Carriers
The Disks
The Pads
Anything else?
Edit: Oh what year were the girling calipers on? Was it a saloon?
thanks. |

Ahhhhhh, just read the Dennis.dup thread.
So it's the R21 Turbo calipers and the 285mm x 21mm disks from a 21NA (4stuf fitment disks)
What's different from the calipers out of interest?
Also has anyone got a sketch of the bracket you need to make? Where do you put the bracket and why is it required?
thanks! |

You want discs for a 21 TXi. They're the only 4-stud R21 brake disc that's 285mm.
The other 4-stud 21's used smaller discs unless I'm much mistaken. |

that could have either style.
Bendix pads are available for both girling/lucas calipers as well but bendix style caliper pads are no use on them.
Ask him for a picture of them! |

Oh shit. I just rung him and he said it's the bendix ones? He said they didn't do Lucas for the turbo ones. He also said Girling/Bendix are the same... I'm confused! |

Lucas and Girling are the same thing, Bendix is different
The Bendix are 54mm pistons identified with either 1334 or 1335 actually cast on the caliper, those are the ones you want. |

Just rung him yet again and he says " the 21 turbo calipers are all the same, they are all bendix" I asked him if he was sure and he said "100%".... Just goes to show some people think they know it all. I guess I can only wait and see now.
Was one type rare than on other or something? My gf's dad said he has never seen a Lucas one for the 21 turbo. But Chris says thats the one I want, but Neal you say I need the bendix aaaaaargh! |

The Lucas/Girling ones are apparently the same as the 19 16v/clio 16v ones (different carriers though?), I have never seen them on a 21 turbo either, but then you can count the 21 turbos i have seen on one hand. I do know that some 21Ts have the Lucas/Girling calipers though, whether I have seen them or not.
I have a pair of the Bendix calipers as I am doing the same thing as you, and they are the same as the ones in denis.dup's pictures, larger than the Lucas/Girling ones. |

Why go to all this hassle for 21 Calipers (on a 1.4) when 16v spec will bold straight on?
I had bendix (on piece) calipers on my 1.4 RT, which were crap. I upgraded them to 16v spec with BRAND NEW Lucas Girling 16v spec calipers (£30 trade in discount), discs, pads using second hand caliper carriers and bolts (as bendix bolts are too long). Inprovement in braking was immense!
This is the easier route for sure. |

Yep 16v kit is more than adequate on a 1.4 and will offer a huge increase in braking performance over the standard kit, especially with all new bits. |

Hey, cheers for the replies. I'll just have to wait and see.
I'm well aware the 16v bolt straight on but i wanted the 285mm route because:
I might have an engine upgrade in the future
I'm bored.
Can get cheap discs and pads (£30 new have them here now)
They fill out 17" better than the 259mm do.
Neal, do you have to use the 21t's carriers and bolts then?
thanks. |
