OK i bought a valver,
But its got its fair share of problems. Here goes:
- No rear wash jet (small hole wher it should be)
- Rust on side sills
- slight rust (not much) on arches
- Paint mostly flasked off on sunroof
- Rear pads need changing (he included new ones tho)
- Steerings naffed up
- Speedo dont work
- Fan (inside) dont work
- Door seal on drivers side slightly damaged, drivers door has to be shut quite hard otherwise it doesnt shut comepletly
- Passenger seat never fully "clicks down"
- Windscreen crack (sjould pass MOT).
Now the things that worry me the most are the speedo and the steering. The speedo has just recently stopped working, it doesnt detect speeds and it doesnt clock any mileage either . Would this just be a case of repalcing the speedo cable? I think the prvious owner mentioned something wrong with a magnet in it?
Also the steering, its steers fine BUT when dirving normally the steering wheel is left about 30 degrees, its perfectly driveable just seriously irritating and obviously wouldnt pass an MOT.
The steering problem was caused by him hitting a curb to avoid someone. Does it sound serious?
Thanks for any help you guys can give! |

Am I right in assuming this is a clio?
- No rear wash jet (small hole wher it should be) common problem, the back of the jet and the pipe are inside the tailgate, just get a new front bit from a scrappies then the 2 clip together.
- Rust on side sills if its a clio it'll be worse than it looks
- slight rust (not much) on arches again worse than it looks
- Paint mostly flasked off on sunroof common problem, the paint flakes off and the aluminium corrodes
- Rear pads need changing (he included new ones tho) easy follow the guide in the knowledge base
- Steerings naffed up
- Speedo dont work
- Fan (inside) dont work common problem, can either be the panel, the fuse, the rheostat or the motor itself, you need to get it out and check
- Door seal on drivers side slightly damaged, drivers door has to be shut quite hard otherwise it doesnt shut comepletly how is it damaged? get another from a scrappy
- Passenger seat never fully "clicks down" MOT failure and can be a fewe things from stick pivot bit oil should sort that to the common cracked subframe which needs replaced or welded
- Windscreen crack (sjould pass MOT). no crack will pass an mot, only a small chip
Steering wheel being offset will pass an mot fine. Him hitting a kerb has dopne some damage, this could be a bent track arm to a knackered rack. You will have to investigate.
Speedo, if the mileage isn't clocking up then the megnet isn't the problem, the magnet drives the needle not the mileage. The cable is either not plugged in or broken.
I hope you got this car for pennies, seems a bit of a money pit for your 1st post! |

its a clio, the 19's fight the rust far better. Thats gonna need a good bit of welding.
and 700 was way to much to pay. 3/400 would have been a better price. |

correct on the price, i paid £600 for mine which had a few problems to say the least and i paid over the odds at that price lookng back!
my MOT just gone cost me £169 and if i'm honest with the state of that sill i'd prob be lookin at a similar price once you add up the windscreen, and whatever is bent
hope i'm wrong though for your sake |

I know someone who is a really good mechanic so can probably get most of whats wrong done by him. He has all the equipment e.t.c in a big garage.
I may have payed too much, but i do like the car tho |

I do really like it, and i do expect problems on a 13 year old car.
The car is MOT'd and taxed until April, so id like to sort out the major stuff by then.
Car also came with Uprated ignition leads and sprak plugs and a £300 super chip from www.superchips.co.uk.
The thing is before the previous owner (2 owners ago), was a renault mechanic and is was really well looked after. The guy i bought it off had it for 2 years and it looks like he didnt take much care of it, he also lives by the sea which doesnt help the rust much. |

Without ringing anywhere up, does anyone know the rough cost of a replacement windscreen?
Thanks. |

about a ton fitted from an independant. More from auto windscreens etc.
I assume you can't do it yourself or you could cut one otu and fit it or buy new from renault, they are very reasopnable for windscreens and have the right tint. |

OK, i just drove it to my mechanical friend.
The engine while cold a bit ticky if you know what i mean, would this be a noisy tappet?
Once the engine is warmed up its fine.
Anyway the mechanic wasnt free today to have a look at it, but he did have a poke around at the rust saying it would need a new side sill, but the rust should pass the MOT in April.
Blimey these cars arent half pokey! The thing takes off after 4000RPM! ( )
OH and another thing, on there way there the Speedo seemed to work? and it satrted clocking miles again. HOWEVER
as soon as i started the engine back up to go home it was dead again. Does that narrow the problems down? Something electrical perhaps (instead of the speedo wire?).
Cheers. |

No rust on the sill will pass the MOT.
So your going to have to get it patched up.
TBH i'd take it to a pre-mot, just to see how badly its going to fail before you start putting money into it. |

I wont be putting that much money into it.
All the mechanical stuff i can have done for free, and my mates knows someone with a body shop that is cheep and is good.
The only thing i gotta shell out for is the Windscreen, and i gotta find out why the passenger seat wont lock down (MOT fail ) |

Iirc on another forum someone said you cant get hold of a new sill anymore.
Have you poked around with a screwdriver yet?
Do that, as this will reveal the extent of how much rust is there, as its almost certain it will just fall to pieces about 5-6 inches around that hole.
Just take that seat out for the mot. |

no i dont want to poke my car to pieces just yet, ill take it to the body shop place on Monday and get the full extent of the damage revealed.
Just had a look at the seat. Its nothing major the clip on the chair goes just slightly wide of the tab on the subframe, rubs on it then goes to the wrong side, if you push it into the tab then it locks down fine. Probably just needs a few good wacks with a hammer. |
