206k miles is a long distance. Its a very long distance on 1 engine.

Even longer some would argue on a 1.4 engine revved to beyond 8000rpm regularly and which was capable of eventually taking a ph1 19 above 130mph.

Some of you have fheard of this fabled, some have seen it, some have been lucky enough to touch it, very few have had the owner of driving it.

This engine is one I am honoured to say for over 100k miles I have maintained, improved and used to its full capability.

The engine wa sopened only once. Some of you from RSC may recall the incident, I changed the cambelt and started it and talked to someone without bolting the bottom pulley up fully, valves hit the pistons. So I changed the head over.

That was this engines only open head surgery. I also ported the head mildly, just enough for a decent gain, not to much for a terrible idle (therefore an MOT PASS) like Sonejis. This happend around the 180k mile mark.

Today I took the head off to pass on to a fellow retro ren member 1fast6. The head is going to him.

Anyway heres some pics.

that was me rubbing the piston crowns thus the silver

headgasket removed, spotless

I then undone the coolant drain plug ont he back of the block and this poured out, clear slightyl blue coolant, this engine has been sitting for over a year btw.

some corrosion on the inlet from the long lay up, not inside is still spotless

a port pic, this shows the majority of the runner was left standard rough, this is what you need when you have a remote fuel system (carb or SPI injector), note work ont he bowl area though, sadly no short turn radius pics, but the head puts out the power.

A well cared for engine can do whatever you want for a long long time.

I need to get this engine going again!

Yay! It lives on in some form.

And I had the exclusive honour of being there when it was uplifted to be taken to the scrapyard in the sky.

That now famous car reminds me of my own 19 in so many ways.

Just re-reading.

Where you say that the runners are left rough deliberately, does this mean that the inlet manifold can't have much done on it to improve flow other than to remove the sharp steps and match the port?

you can shape things however you like, just dont then go and polish it up to a mirror finish.
