Hey guys, I haven't posted on here in a while, but I thought I would share my recent joys with you all lol. I've had the car 2 and a half years now, and for the first MOT it just needed one new tyre, for it's next MOT it needed nothing doing at all.......and then......um.......oh dear on this one lol.
Well, the good news is, the car is "mechanically perfect" in the words of the garage, so that's good! But yeah, you guessed it.....RUST
It needs welding in 8 places, but all really small bits they said. 3 of the places were seat-belt mounting points, and the rest are like sills, subframe & suspension mounting points......which to me sounds really bad! But the guy at the garage didn't think it was all that bad, said it was well worth doing cuz the rest of the car was so good like. So yeah anyway, am just waiting for a price on the welding and then will decide what to do I guess. I reckon I will do it whatever it costs tho, I wanna keep this car!
I'll let you all know what it costs! Anyone had a lot of welding done before? What sorta price would any of you guess for this? Or no idea? The guy said it basically depends on where the welding is, and what's gotta be stripped off the car for them to be able to do it like. Ah well, should know tomorrow anyway, no point in guessing! |

GYP failed its mot also on rust
Rear suspension mounting points, front inner wings and sills
now i dont know how bad your suspension mounting points have gone, but on mine to get to all the places that needed welding, it needed the rear beam to be removed.
Cheapest quote i got was £500 |

Oh yeah, front inner wings was also another one he said to me too. Forgot about that one. So....stupid question alert.......but.....how is welding in the long term? Like if I sort out these 8 problems now, and I just asking for trouble in my next MOT like? And everyone is telling me to get the welding sorted and then underseal it to stop it rusting again......and I keep saying underseal isn't gonna stop it rusting surely, it's just gonna hide it from you being able to see it! |

Undersealing will helpprotect the welding that has been done, to stop it from needing to be done again |

Yeah I was quoted £300 for the welding, and you lot are gonna think I'm mad but I've told 'em to get on with it lol. I was lookin around for other cars when I thought I might actually have to get rid of the 19.....but.....there is just nothing else I like. Well, that's cheap & I can actually insure etc. So yeah, it would of had to be another 19....and the way I see it.....I'd have been back to square one then like. At least I know mine is mechanically like a legend. And....er.....shit underneath lol. Probably the worst way round to have them really! Ah well, I love the car, and £300 to keep it on the road is fine by me |

£300 sounds reasonable if it gives you another year of motoring
I was quite lucky in a way, even thou GYP failed and needed over £500 spending on it just in welding digital biscuit put his valver up for sale on here a week later.
Neal and i went to take a look at it and bodywork wise it was sound, no rust on the rear arches or inner front arches so paid him £75 for it and took it home
Using the good parts from GYP, selling the other parts from GYP to pay for things like clutch kits and water pumps, timing belts etc etc, i guess the car in the end has cost me about £50 lol
But that was only cos i had GYP available for spares and made money out of selling parts from it.
Plus i had the time to do it where as i assume your 19 is your daily driver and without it you are stuck.
So yeah go for it Si and it saves another 19 from ending up in the scrappy |

that would be assuming Si knows how to weld in the first place.
Bodywork is not my strong point either, last time i attempted any welding was on my mates ford orion, the battery tray wanted doing for the mot so i gave it a go, first attempt and i made a bigger mess of it than what it was originally lol
I did sort it in the end but it took a hell of a lot of time and mistakes to get there.
I'll leave welding to those who know what they are doing heh |

All I would do with a welder was look at it and wonder how it worked lol. So yeah, like until I get out of this R19 16v phase.......I will always want one! When the garage initially phoned me, it was sounding like there was too much welding and it was gonna be a scrap job, and man I nearly cried like! But then I was on ebay for a good few hours lookin around at other possible cars......but I always ended back on the 19. There is just nothing else I'd rather! So until then, I will be doing pretty much anything to avoid this one goin to the scrappy |

when it's been welded, get under there yourself and make sure it's been painted/sealed up proper so it doesnt rust again. |
