Hi ya guys
Forgive me if i say anything wrong but iam only familar on k-series engines and iam trying to help a mate out.
Hes just had his engine replaced in his renault 19 and hes having a few problems.
When he puts the clutch down to change down from second to first the car stalls. I had the same problem on my metro and it was the throttle potentiometer and the stepper motor incorrectly set causing the car to not have enough throttle at idle. The revs just drop straight to zero without hitting 900rpm and staying there.
Anyways i had a look at his throttle and the wiring is a mess to say the least. Bare wires from the red potentiometer going to what looks like another potentiometer (maybe a stepper motor or . Air control valve?
I can clearly see a place for a plug to go into next to the potentiometer but theres nothing there and no loose connector lying around the engine so someone must of chopped it off in the past. BODGE!!!! Has anyone got a decent Photo of the throttle body that they can post a link to so i can at least get some idea of what it should look like because at the moment theres wires going everywhere and i very much doubt they are even working
By the way its a 1.8 16 valve

righty, the pot wiring goes straight into the loom nowhere else.
On some throttbel bodies theres another connector with 1 wire and pin in it on the side, thats for the TB heater. This won't be used on this car.
The idle control valve is on the head above the thermostat housing, follow the top hose to the engine and there it is.
the bare wires and loss of insulation is a common problem on these.
I will be doing a tech article on all of this very soon and getting pics for the EFI article.
But gimme a few mins and i'll get a TB pic.
Also theres 3 places peopel can arse up the throttle bodies. The throttle sensor itself, leave it alone, the bypass screw on the top which should be under a sealed plug and the throttle stop screw.
If these are messed with then it will not run right at all. |

that shows the ISCV, its the thing just left orf my gaffa taped throttle cable. It has the cream coloured plug on top of it.
shows the TB you can also see the TB heater connector under the wiring. |

ok well the socket for the plugs is the throttle body heater then. The wires with no insulation are they known to cause similar problems to what my friend is experiencing?
I will have a look at the idle valve later and make sure the connectors are on firmy, give it a clean up with some wd40
I thought my metro had crappy wiring!
has anyone had these problems before? |

I have sorted a few.
if the wires touch then the car can stall, also this seems to be a dodgy batch as some cars have the originals on there and no damage at all.
When you say had his engine changed did he have any trouble before? Did they swap the TB etc over from the old engine? |

I dunno mate i assume he kept the existing throttle body and simply swapped them over. Seeing as the wires are so delicate it wouldnt of taken much for them to get damaged. The thing is thou is that they look like someone has stripped the wire down deliberatly.
I put some insulation tape around the wires in an attempt to fix the problem. Theres no slack in them at all which makes it even harder.
he didnt have the problem before the engine swap but seeing that the wiring loom is 12 years old they dont take to kindly to being moved!
I think its more likily a case of the connector to the idle control valve being faulty. Is there anyway of testing this with a meter or could it damage the ECU
his old engine expired in a massive smookey trail. i will ask him about what exactly was change when the engine was replaced |

the looms on the older rens tend to be quite good, the newer gear is crap, anyone who has had to replace a section of loom in a V6 laguna will agree.
Anyway, the TPS connector, this slides off the bracket, slide it off, cut the black sheath that contains the wires off then check the wires there for damage.
If you block the ICV feed pipe off to the manifold when the engines warm and unplug the ICV electrical connector start the car, it may not start easily but the natural idle should be around 900rpm.
If you test it with the ignition off you will not damage the ECU, but I wouldn't do it with it running. I don't have any figures for you but if you get some I can check them tomorrow. |
