Hi peeps i am planning a engine swap for my R5, and need some advice from you. I have sorced a low millage volvo 480 turbo engine (1.7) and box complete with all the ancillaries, and was wondering if my existing wiring loom can be used with this engine also will my drive shafts and gearbox be ok with this. I know that volvo use the same 1.7 engine as renault but was just wondering if the parts named above are compatable and do you think it will drop straight into my 5's engine bay.
I have a 1.7gtx R5 so will be using the shafts and wiring loom from this.
Thought it would be a good project to do and something a little different as i have a 5 door car and want to turn it into something a little more fun to drive. |

right does the new engine use efi ie does it have a ECU?
pretty sure you will be able to use the existing engine mounts. the loom will swap over as if there's no ECU you shoud be able to use the existing loom from the 5 (chris think this is right) not sure if the ignition control unit is the same if it is use the renault 1. |

the 480 engine is efi and runs maf.
You need the full loom and ECU etc for it.
You will also need to change the fuel lines and fuel pump to deliver the goods. The will be wiring and plumbing but its not impossible. |

the biggest problem will be getting the engine to physically fit with all the extra pipe work. the loom shouldn't be a problem as electrically you are doing a simillar job to what i've done and. just don't expect to do it in a weekend.the drive shafts from the 5 will be man enough (pretty sure their the same as the gtt)
will the gtx box fit the volvo lump? should do if it mounts straight on use the gtx box as you won't need to change speedo's or cabels. does the turbo use a intercooler? if it does you might want to think about a gtt rad as this is narrower than the gtx rad. |

and also, afaik, the ignition coil, etc, are not the same, so you will need the ignition system from the volvo as well... |

Cool seems pretty good to me as i plan to get another car for normal every day use and have the 5 as a project / weekend car. I can get all the bits i need from the volvo as its a complete car. Im not to bad with all the electrical stuff. My only concern is will it fit without farting around to much as i was hoping that it would drop straight in after changing the things you have already mentioned.
Also after speaking to tominbristol last night he informed me that the R19 16v engine is capable of about 130bhp which is more than the 1.7 volvo turbo conversion, can anyone give me any advice on this swap, along with parts needed, will the engine drop in ok, as it looks massive compared to my engine and i dont want to start chopping away at anything to make it fit.
Sorry about all the Q's but i just want a bit more power and to weigh up my options before jumping in head first.
Thanks
Steve |
