Its a camcorder that takes stills? Or a camera that takes videos?

Hmmm JVC, I have one of thoose. You need a Firewire cable by the sound's of it. Then with that just use the PC to get the footage off. You need a big ass Hardrive.

I thought it strange that it had a usb connection so i thought it might be a camera

1 port is all you really need. Chances are they camcorder has a 4 wire (small) connector and the pc card will have a 6 wire (big) connector so you'll need the right cable.

Theres one of the pc world site for 15 quid btw

Some video cameras have usb 2.0 chet, my sony handycam does.

David, make sure your camcorder does have a firewire connector otherwise you'll be wasting your money.

Ooh i didn't know that. I was under the impression that usb 2.0 didn't have the bandwidth capabilities for dv, despite the extra speed

The bandwidth of USB 2.0 is almost the same as firewire 400, and I can see a standard pal resolution image using all that.
