I think it does depend on the branch you go to. The one in Aberystwyth for example has been brilliant with me, sorted the cronic rattling out on my Seat's exhaust; cost me a grand total of a fiver.

Kwik-Fit and Mr Clutch... two companies with the biggest "Rip the motorist off" approach to work in the UK. They prey on the weak, ignorant and easily scared to make a so called honest living. They changed my brake pads for me many years ago and ended up killing my master cylinder in the process... apparently that was nothing to do with them either resetting the pistons.

To be honest i'm suprised they didn't try to sting her for a new Battery aswell

I largely agree with you Mick, clearly their customer base is those who are clueless about cars, just as PC world service department's customer base are those who know jack shit about PCs.

People can take their car to a back street garage or local grease monkey and in most cases get a better job for less money... but you know how people are, theyd rather go to a brightly lit clean well known brand with a colourful recognisable logo.

They never seem to be short of customers though so supply and demand says why would they charge less for their services?

They are all run by human beings though so they will all be different in some ways, and I have to say although I've never had any proper work done by them, my local kwik fit are pretty decent blokes, they give me exhaust hangers if i go in and ask nicely, and they took my tyres off my alloys for nothing recently as well.

It is a bit scandalous though when you hear stories of them telling people they need stuff done that they dont need at all.

This is a general motor trade issue.

i know a lot of facts and figures about the trade (remember I tried to set up but that will never happen in this country cos its a fucking joke that deserves to be bombed to nothing), profit margins and so on.

The way businesses work is go in with the highest prices that the opposition does and you should get them, if not why not? etc etc

Back street places are useless as well, in fact 99% of the vehicular repair trade in this counrty are fecking diabolical.

Training is poor, common sense is poo, service is poor and so on.

There is no need for any garage to be dirty and frankly its unacceptable. New merc and audi places with gleaming white tiles everywhere are a good example, its achievable and easy to keep it that way.

Walking to the door way then having to jump the foot wide line of grease to get into the place is a disgrace.

A decent diagnostician say trained up by Frank Massey or Simon Ashby, they will charge out their or a diagnosticians time at a lowest rate of £75 p/h, the technician will get about £35 of that to his wages. That may seem expensiv eit snot, the trainign and the fact the jobs done correctly first time mean its money well spent.

The franchises like reg vardy, arnold clark etc etc do not have the knowledge to competantly repair a car. They are giving the clip or some other OBDII code reader and they do what the screen tells them, they don't adhere to proper procedures or part take in any mechanical repairs that are not straight substitution.

I'm rambling I will stop.

My local quick fit charged me £40 to fix the exhaust, and didn't. It was when I first got the car and the problem turned out to be the rear engine mount (engine rocking back and forcing the manifold/downpipe connection apart). Obviously wasn't pleased about it went back and got my money.

but that's what Chris is saying... if the job was done right first time then you wouldn't have had to go back for a refund or to have other work carried out and that's down to employing a narrow minded idiot who can't think for themself!

I can't stand Kwikfit but have to admit my local ATS has been ok. Apart from the last quote I got for an exhaust!
