Have done some mechanical repairs to the 16v now, it's going quite well. Even the brakes are fairly sharp after a session on them last night! Also replaced n/s driveshaft last week.
Anyhow, I was going for a bit of a hard drive before hopefully MOT-ing it tomorrow, and I noticed a noise coming from the front. It's a ticking sound, quite loud, and it's always there. It's not constant, it goes with the engine - if I'm driving and put the clutch pedal down it dies away (although thinking about it, possibly because I'm not on the accelerator at the time). It doesn't seem to come from one side or the other. It's also there, slowly, at idle revs so I'm guessing nothing to do with my shaft replacement or wheel changing malarkey.
I reckoned on about 8 ticks per second driving around town which seems a little slow to be once per engine rev? If this is a normal noise I'll feel stoopid but happy, otherwise i'll be concerned |

(Did subscribe it just doesn't say so on my profile ? besides which i could already see the knowledge base before i subscribed)
Just took it for a spin this morning and didn't have the problem at all. Although I wasn't trying to rag it round (traffic!) I did the same route and couldn't get it to make the noise. Fingers crossed it won't return too fast!
Do need to do an o/s CV joint too though |

having oil half way up the dipstick does NOT mean it is definately a tappet!
if it is a tappet it is purely coincidental. |

I'm hoping you can diagnose the difference between a knocking CV joint and a ticking tappet...otherwise its very difficult for anyone to be any help online. |

*cue Chris H mentioning JB's incredibly tappity head*
Bung some wyns valve cleaner in it, i had a lifter that was sticking in my head which was making a ticking sound, bunged some of that in it and within 50 miles the ticking had gone

The Pink Panther uses it in his car

I had a ticking on the Clio 16v.
Scratched my head for ages...turned out to be a loose bolt on the water pump pulley. |
