Hi Guys.
Just been towed back from near Tesco's after my clutch cable snapped!
I couldnt even repair it as it snapped just behind the bulk head where it had been rubbing. The mechanic said that when they had replaced it in the past before i had it,they had installed it on a bad angle and no protective tubing to stop this from happening!
So my questions are:
what is the number i need to quote to get a replacement.
How much are they
Renault or other company
And HOW do i install it. I can follow it round from the pedal around the back of the engine, over the box and into the forks, Is the cable a pain to get over the forks or is it quiet easy.
Fiancee in hospital, some stupid old fart reversing in to the car and now the cable snapping!!! WHAT ELSE??

right get a renault clutch cable, they last the longest and you get the right one.
Under 20 quid.
Fit the outer cable into the guides, one at the box, the one on the chassis rail and the 2 clips on the bulkhead.
The cable has to clip into the pedal box properly, generally tugging the inner cable with pliers in the footwell clips it in.
The pedal, these wear, again under 20 quid from renault and worth gettign if the old pedals looking dodgy or you can feel worn teeth on the self adjusting quadrant.
Inner cable goes through the guide hole in the slot then into the groove. It can slip out of here, theres meant to be a wee stopper in there but in my time I thinkI have seen 1 still on the pedal.
Then go round to the engine bay and pull the cable and hook it over the release fork. You shoudl be done.
Press the pedal it may feel funny at first but after 1/2 presses it should be right. If its not then the cable may be the wrong one (always a prob with non ren bits) of the self adjustign pedals worn. |

Right Chris.
I managed to do all of the above yesterday.
However all the teeth are intact on the pedal and the cable is still slack. I was guaranteed the correct cable by renault and measured this up with the snapped one. A1 no probs.
Done all of the above. Even to the point of pressing the clutch. Yes it did tighten up but still couldnt change gear. Upon looking at the gearbox end it was still slack!
I am at a total lose. I rang renault up and they said there should be 2 forks in which the cable sits in at the back of the pedal.
Anymore advice?

theres not, it goes through the whit eeye then into the black quadrant bit.
Is the pedal loose? The bushes can and do break allowing miles of play. |

the investigator is comeing from my solicitors, not the insurance as im having the car fixed,.
One fo the garages said it could be the pressure plate?? But how can it be the pressure plate when i can still pull 3 inch of cord out of the clutch cable!!
Im sure its set up right.
right cable right feedings but still no tension.
why cant anythinf be simple!

Right
Had my mate bring his phase 2 around.
I felt the clutch pedal in his and think ive found a problem, hope its an easy fix!! as follows:
This is a really difficult one to explain but ill give it a go:
Everything is the same up until the eye. His as chris states, black qudrant bit/cog is in the position where when you feel the top of it you can feel most/all the teeth. My black qudrant bit is pulled right back to the point where you cant feel any of the teeth.
Is that black quadrant meant to be attached anywhere to keep it down and taught?? At the moment its rotating preety free 270 degrees without the cable, when the cable is on and the clutch is depressed you can just feel the first 2 teeth, other than that the only thing controlling it is the cable.
I just cant understand it.
ask me any questions you want about this and i will answer them as i really need to get the car mobile.

Right fixed it.
The problem was the spring that attaches the pedal to the quadrant. THATS ALL IT WAS.
I never replaced it as im going to replace the whole clutch pedal soon. To do this i am not looking forward to taking the sterring coloumn off!!

I dont think the steering col has to come off to change the pedal, Addie did it on the 16v before he sold it to me and im pretty certain it was done without. |

Talked to Turkey, the mechnic from down the road from me. I put him on the spot and he said that once you remove the circlip theres not enough room to take the pedal off.
Im not disputin ! (Cant be bothered the spell check). Just that ive got enough going on at the mo without messing around with the coloumn

the small spring underneath that pulls the quadrant up? Never seen a prob with that before.
Also the pedal is easliy removed and replaced without removing enything.
Although its a damn sight easier if you remove the panel under the column where the steering height adjuster handle folds into, then pop the air duct out.
20 misn and it should be done. removing the column easily makes it a 3 hour job.
So your mechanic mate is talking crap. |

Thanks Chris, made a bit more happier.
I believe turkey when he said it was the spring as id spotted it myself before hed looked at it, but never put 2 and 2 together. It was ok on the pedal side but when it hooked into the qudrant it had become overstretched and was catching on the surround. Therefore not tensing the cable up.
I wasnt looking forward to the coloums saga so ill go and but a new ratchet(Quadrant) and spring £6.50 from partco. How Is the pedal held on to the bar? by spacer with circlips or does it just bolt on?
I think its about time i invest in a haynes!!!

shaft runs throught he clutch and brake pedal, you need to remove the clip on the clutch side and pop th eclip out of the bracket on the brake side then slide it through to the brakes side and the clutch pedal will fall off. |

ok read up a litle as chris say pull lil clip off then slide bar to right then pedal falls of remember the order of the lil bits and bobs i got a whole pedal kit off renault for 17 pound incl 10% blagged discount
cables easy i use speaker cable pushed through from near pedals in to bay then tie cable on with insulation tape and with top heat sheild removed and then pull it thrrough pushing self addjuster to its up most to give enough slack to let me nan pop cable on the gearbox end
i prefer cable from lucus, proper cable from reno they quoted 40 pound ive tryed it before its got the extra weighted end but it went after 3k standard at and halfords ones have lasted a while they is the blue coated one and this current lucus one i ordered and got for 14 quid is doing pritty we should create comparison charts |
